“Applause” to Star’s Stand Against PETA
Perhaps unsurprisingly for a pop star who once wore a dress made of preserved meats, Lady Gaga has had a tiff with People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). But unlike some celebrities who capitulate to the world’s most notorious animal liberation group, Gaga has taken the organization to task for its awful record.
Gaga is currently on a promotional tour for her latest album, and that took her onto Howard Stern’s satellite radio show the other day. At the end of the interview, Gaga offered Stern (a major supporter of his local animal shelter) support for the animal charity of his choice—on the condition it wasn’t PETA. You can listen to the interview at the link.
But that wasn’t all: Gaga told Stern and his listeners about two of PETA’s biggest black eyes: Its anti-pet positions and their habit of killing roughly 90 percent of the dogs and cats in its shelter every year. And this isn’t baseless celebrity bloviating, since the facts back the star up.
Our PetaKillsAnimals.com website compiles PETA’s annual filings with the Commonwealth of Virginia (going back to 1998) to provide a comprehensive count of PETA’s doggie bodies. Since records first became available through 2012, PETA has killed 29,398 pets, over 87 percent of the total that the group’s animal shelter has taken possession of.
And Gaga is completely correct to argue that PETA doesn’t want people to own pets. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk once said, “In the end, I think it would be lovely if we stopped this whole notion of pets altogether.” Given that Stern is a huge pet lover, it’s probably best that he should follow Gaga’s advice and continue giving local, rather than radical.
Check out our new site that calls out PETA for killing so many pets even as it campaigns to ban all uses of animals by people. Even caring for pets is against PETA’s principles: PETA President Ingrid Newkirk has said, “It would be lovely if we stopped this whole notion of pets altogether.”
We will continue to expose PETA for its hypocrisy and extremism. Head over to Petakillsanimals.com to see the full, graphic truth—if you can stomach it.
